Sees Finishes Second at Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic
BROCKPORT, NY- Mike Sees (Northumberland/Northumberland) placed second at 125 pounds at the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic to lead the Bloomsburg University wrestling team to a ninth-place finish. Oklahoma won the tournament with 171 points, while Pennsylvania was second with 166 points. Army finished third with 133 points, while Bloomsburg finished the tournament with 71.5 points.
Sees went 3-1 in the tournament, beating Rutgers' Ricky Ringel, 12-6 in the second round after a bye in the first. In the quarterfinals, Sees won a 3-1 decision by Ohio University's Caleb Metcalf, before winning a third-straight match over Jeff Schell of Brown University, 11-9, to make it to the finals.
In the title match, Sees lost in a tight decision, 8-6, to Oklahoma's Sam Hazelwinkel. Hazelwinkel was one of five Sooners to win the tournament.
Brad Forbes (Downingtown/Downingtown) also wrestled in the finals round, taking third at 141 pounds. After a first-round bye, Forbes got a pin over Brockport's John Bonaldi at the five-minute mark to advance to the quarterfinals against Mike Hurley of Cleveland State. Forbes won in a 4-0 decision over Hurley to advance to the semifinals where he fell in a 6-4 decision to University of Pennsylvania's Cesar Grajales. In the third-place bout, Forbes won a 2-1 decision over Rutgers' Steve Adamcski.
Also placing was Jim Bertulis (Aston/Garnett Valley) at 165 pounds. Bertulis recorded a pin in the second round against Buffalo's Jake Blowers at the 1:17 mark into the match. In the quarterfinals, Bertulis got a 9-1 major decision win over Jon Anderson from Army. In his last three matches, Bertulis lost by injury default to take sixth.
Frank Beasley (Oden, IL/Centralia) also wrestled well for the Huskies, going 2-2 in the tournament with wins over Brown University and Ohio University, while Jesse Hasseman (Franklin, IN/Franklin went 2-2 with wins over Army and Brockport.
The Huskies will host their home opener on Tuesday against Pittsburgh at 7:30 p.m.
